Week 1: Our scared voice. (June 23rd, 10am-noon AEST)

Our scared voice is the one that needs time to process and think, doesn’t know what to say, gets confused, feels safe with silence, has been controlled, is frightened and people pleases. For many, our voice was taken from us, and our scared voice became dominant by no fault of our own.

Yet for having a scared voice society tells us that we’re too quiet, too timid, have no confidence, need to learn how to speak up and have to stand up for ourselves in the real world.

During this session we will honour all that our scared voice brings to our life, the ways it works to protect us and why it is so needed. We will give it the compassion and understanding it needs to feel safe and allowed to belong.

Week 2. Our insecure voice. (June 30th, 10am-noon AEST)

Our insecure voice is the one that tells us we aren’t enough, or that our value isn’t valued by others. Insecure voice talks a lot inside our head, compares us to others, tells us not to try new things, convinces us that unless we are growing, succeeding and changing that we will not meet our potential. Insecure voice talks a lot, is dominant for so many of us, and is so convincing that we often believe what it tells us.

In truth insecure voice has developed due to a pile on of tiny snippets of things we’ve been told or overheard, or messaging we’ve picked up on in society, since the moment we were born. Insecure voice has a lot to work with given that all around us are harmful (and untrue) standards around beauty, health, success, finance, popularity, socialisation, relationships, sexuality and so much more.

During this session we will honour all the ways that insecure voice was developed, without blaming ourselves for its existence. We will remind ourselves that almost everything it tells us comes from nonsense that doesn’t actually exist. We will work to let go of the shame we hold about having an insecure voice, remembering that every other human has one too.

Week 3. Our rogue voice. (July 7th, 10am-noon AEST)

Rogue voice can be unpredictable, cheeky, naughty, inappropriate, hurtful, irresponsible, disrespectful and more, but can also call out truth, challenge authority, speak up for self and others, think outside the square and instigate important conversations.

Rogue voice is usually disliked by those who have control over us, because it can challenge their sense of security in the knowing that we will obey. And this is its power and beauty. Going rogue can sometimes cause harm, but harnessing rogue voice and working out how and when to use it is a gift that will serve us and those we care about, and will model to our children that it is ok (and needed) to speak up when others expect us to be silent.

During this session will we reflect on all the different ways our rogue voice shows up, deciding which have a powerful place and which can potentially make life more difficult for us. Rogue voice can be fun and funny and we will recognise the importance of our inner rogue in a way that shapes it to work for us and not against us.

Week 4. Our angry voice. (July 14th, 10am-noon AEST)

From the moment we grow from infant to toddler our angry voice is shushed, put down, seen as bad, and told that it shouldn’t exist. This is an impossible ask as all humans experience all emotions all through their lives. And many of us have had circumstances in life that rightly make our angry voice well developed and dominant.

We know that the ‘anger management’ frameworks of past eras didn’t work because they were non trauma informed and served to suppress anger on the inside, rather than to transmute and move it through us. Our angry voice needs perhaps the most understanding and love of all our voices as it is lack of love that grows it.

In this session we will cover a range of ways of using angry voice to externalise angry voice safely, rather than projecting it or suppressing it. We will honour our angry voice, recognising that (like all parts of us) it deserves compassion, not shame.

The Magic and Medicine of Voice is program is for all adults who wish to deepen their understanding of different elements of their voices, both the external voice that we use out loud and the inner voices that live privately inside us.

This program is trauma informed, neurological affirming and does not seek to ‘fix’ our voice but rather supports us to create deeper relationship with it.

Hi, I'm Alli.

A former Neurologic Music Therapist who stepped out of the allied health system after 16 years, and now focuses on enacting societal change by dismantling harmful musical myths.

As a woman I was suppressed by the systems that told me to ‘be seen and not heard’, to ‘stop being hysterical’, to ‘not give up my day job’ in response to my musical expression.

Others were led to believe that not being able to play an instrument, sing in tune or access lessons meant they were ‘not musical’. Some were told to mine in the school choir. Many were punished for using their voice to speak up.

These systems are coming to an end.

AND WE ARE THE ONES DISMANTLING THEM.

To be human is to be musical. And once we step into our full power as musical beings our lives will transform in ways we never knew were possible.
