Creative self expression, at its core, is about being IN a moment of creativity.
Not about what we create, how we want it to turn out, how in tune our voice is, what score we will get, whether it matches the description we were given or how it compares to someone else’s creativity.
Yet so much of our creative projects are undertaken as just that – projects! Creative endeavours with an agenda. Which waters down our ability to fully and completely express creatively, in the moment.
Creative projects are still absolutely creative! But when they’re outcome-based we limit our true creative expression.
And this impacts our braincare.
Creative self expression is one of our Mother tongues (along with spoken communication and music), and to deny our creativity, even minutely, because of a preconceived outcome means we are limiting one of our truest forms of expression.
Instead of creating mantra beads like I usually do, I took my bead collection out and I just played, mindlessly, mindfully, for 2 hours.
I played with the beads in my hands, thread them on strings and then unthreaded them again, creatively expressing myself with no agenda or self-imposed expectation – and it felt amazing!!! I was light. I was liberated. I had been true to my authenticity and my goodness does the brain/body/nervous system love it when we’re true to our authenticity!
Creative self expression is one of the Pillars of Brain Care. It’s one that children are brilliant at, and that we can be brilliant at again, once we remove the “I don’t have time for this” or “but, what’s the point?” Conditioning that we develop as soon as we’re old enough to start producing creative outcomes.
It’s not about the art, it’s about every moment of arting.
It’s not about the music, it’s about every moment of musicing.
It’s not about the dance, it’s about every moment of dancing.
We can creatively express ourselves once again, the way we did as children. We don’t need two hours at a time, we just need moments. Moments here and moments there, to truly be IN the moment.
To express ourselves creatively so not about time but absolutely space. And gee wiz it. Feels. GOOD!!!!
