You would not believe the *trillions* of tiny ways that music supports us to learn, function, regulate, recall, integrate.
The way our brain responds to music is OFF THE CHARTS!!! But this little trick?
Learning information by learning it to a melody is one of the best educational hacks in the book.
Melody and Long Term Memory are seriously like best friends, joined at the hip, never not together.
There is no way that any of us, let alone a toddler, could remember 26 random pieces of information in the correct order, without there being a song.
(I mean I know the alphabet, but I don’t even know my husband’s phone number!)
The alphabet song is the perfect example of a Musical Mnemonic (using music to make sense of input so it can be remembered).
Melody helps us create and recall long term memories, and should be used in ALL educative settings.
And so as music becomes less and less present in schools (potentially not in classrooms because of amazing teachers, but as reflected in funding, time allocation and expected outcomes) I really start to wonder… Imagine how much children would learn if there was MORE music in schools.
Music in every classroom, every lesson, everywhere, all the time.
And the answer, I think, is that schools would blow their expected academic outcome out of the freakin park!
I have so much to share with you about music and the Brain, their beautiful relationship and the potential for regulation and anxiety management when music is used strategically.
So while we are at home, and we have this wonderful opportunity to have our classrooms at home. Let’s try to include a little music each day in the way we teach, learn and play.
Our childrens brains will thank us for it.
(Oh, and parents? Make a jingle for your phone number and teach it to your children as a song, one day they’ll need it.)
Ps. This video is for your children (of any age) to watch, and the video caption is for you – so you know the therapeutic benefit of showing them this video! Enjoy
