Despite a current lifestyle which often focuses on television and computers, storytelling proves to be an enriching experience that people love to be a part of.
Storytelling is a non-invasive form of therapy that people of all ages, especially children, can relate to and enjoy.
Stories can awaken dorment feelings, offer wisdom, make light of a situation, expand imagination, give us ideas and help us to find solutions. Fairy tales, fables, parables, poetry, myths, legends, epics, anecdotes and folklore often contain morals and positive messages that can be related to situations of everyday life and can specifically be used to help understand concepts such as grief, loss and trauma and the emotions involved.
Creative story-writing is also a highly effective therapy in dealing with traumatic situations.
Stories containing key elements such as a good and bad character, time and place can be used as a tool for exploration and reflection. The process of listening to, reading or writing a story can be an excellent intervention for understanding, changing behaviour or solving problems.
Alli uses storytelling and assists others to create stories in order to deal with situations such as birth, death, marriage, divorce, abuse, sickness, religion and friendship. Sessions often involve props such as books, pictures, puppets and music.
Storytelling and writing is a highly effective and creative individual or group therapy.
